From what we understand from the manga so far, Nikaido is an orphan. She was discovered wandering on her own by a kind elderly couple, and they adopted her into their family. Also within this family lived a young man named Kawajiri, and a little girl only slightly older than Nikaido named Yakumo. They were all very happy together. Even though Nikaido was only four years old, Yakumo began to train her vigorously in martial arts.
Living within world of magic users, all of the children within Auntie and Uncle's house had a magical ability of their own. Kawajiri could teleport, and Yakumo could fly. Nikaido's ability was unknown, but she began to experiment with it more and more--and one day, managed to create an enormous black cube.
Upon touching the cube, she remembered a story that Yakumo told her. It was the story of Yakumo's incredible luck, and how Auntie and Uncle had found her as a baby, floating down a river in a basket. If they hadn't rescued her, she would have fallen over the edge of the river and drowned. Nikaido is a user of time magic. With that memory in mind, she had inadvertently transported herself to the very day of when Yakumo was adopted.
Nikaido, delighted to see Auntie and Uncle walking down the path, ran to them to greet them. They responded with confusion and suspicion. They didn't know this strange child--and why was she calling them Auntie and Uncle? While they were distracted, Yakumo's basket floated past unnoticed, and the baby within drowned.
Managing to return back to the present, Nikaido was horrified to realize that she had altered the past and made it so Yakumo never existed. Auntie, Uncle, and Kawajiri had no idea who this 'Yakumo' person was. Nikaido ran back to the river, only to find a gravestone marking the passing of an unnamed soul. This led to Nikaido's fear and disgust of her own magic, swearing not to use it ever again.
It is not explained in the manga what happened next, but it is assumed Nikaido used her time traveling magic once again. Kawajiri's first memory of Nikaido was spotting her following him in the Hole as a grubby orphan child. He was in the final stages of his exam to become a devil, and that required not using his magic for an entire year. Just then, he was ambushed by men who wanted to form a contract with him. In Dorohedoro, a contract can be formed willingly between two partners, or unwillingly by force.
Before Kawajiri could use his magic to save himself and ultimately fail the test to become a demon, Nikaido attacked the men with her martial art skills, driving them away and saving Kawajiri. He became the demon called Asu, and was eternally grateful to her for saving him.
Skipping to the present day, we see that Nikaido has established a restaurant for herself in the Hole, using the gyoza recipe she learned from Auntie. She helps Kaiman in his quest to discover his lost memories and to find the person who cursed him with magic, all while hiding the fact that she, herself, is a magic user.
Because of her time magic, Nikaido is kidnapped by the crime lord En. Her chest is cut open and a contract is forced inside of her, effectively binding her to his will. Asu notifies Kaiman that Nikaido is in danger, and is ultimately stripped of his demon powers and forced to be an ordinary magic user once more as punishment. Demons are not allowed to interfere in contract-making, even if it is unwilling. Kaiman goes to rescue her, and the contract is forced out of Nikaido's body.
Kaiman regains his lost memories, as well as his human face, remembering that he was a man named Aikawa. However, he forgets everything he knew when he had been Kaiman. He leaves.
With Kawajiri/Asu's persuasion, Nikaido grudgingly begins to try to learn how to master her power so that she can use it to get back everything she's lost. This requires facing the physical manifestation of her fears thanks to special demon-exam equipment that Kawajiri/Asu possesses. She succeeds... only to realize she has grown demon horns, and later, a tail.
Able to now use her time traveling abilities, we learn that Nikaido only has a set 'amount' of magic. In short, she can only use this ability six times--and she's already used it twice. With Kawajiri/Asu in tow, Nikaido goes back in time and rescues Yakumo, and when she returns to the present, she sees an adult Yakumo flying through the skies.

Personality: Nikaido is a kind and determined young woman. She works hard, she rarely complains, and always has a smile to spare. She’s a likable person, laid-back and levelheaded. She’s generally considerate of others and doesn't make waves. It’s difficult to rile her up, and insults and general nastiness rolls right over her back. The Hole is a savage place in and of itself, and the strong eat the weak. Despite this, Nikaido is shown to be a sympathetic and caring character. She willingly gives out food for free from her restaurant despite her own money troubles and lends an ear to the problems of strangers.
Though Nikaido can be generous, she isn't about to risk her own life to save people. Her own survival is her number one priority, and she will do whatever it takes in order to live. She will offer often those threatening her one chance to back down. If they don’t take it, she won’t hesitate to take them out. She is a savage, merciless fighter, able to shut down her own emotions and brutally kill people without as much as a flicker of guilt. The size or strength of her opponent doesn't faze her, and she’s not above a fleeing the battle if she’s clearly outclassed. Though Nikaido doesn't relish in causing pain or killing, she’ll do what is necessary to ensure her own survival, such as when she kills a smoke seller when in desperate need for money.
She is a realistic, sensible person, and while she allows herself to dream, she only dreams about things that are reasonably obtainable. She wants to own a successful restaurant in the Hole. She doesn't honestly believe in miracles. Those who are blindly optimistic will probably get an arched brow and a shake of her head, because Nikaido knows the world doesn't work like that—at least where she comes from.
Underneath her calm, cheery exterior, Nikaido harbors immense anxiety, guilt, and self-loathing. She’s lost nearly everything important to her in her life, and almost all of it was a direct result of her own actions. Her childhood friend, Yakumo, died as a result of her messing with her time magic and accidentally altering the past. Her other childhood friend, Asu, was stripped as a demon and reverted back to a magic user because he’d insisted on helping her (Magic users can become demons through vigorous training, then become immortal/eternally happy/it’s a huge blow to be reverted back to a mere magic-user!). She also blames herself for Kaiman’s death at the hands of En. If En hadn't been going after Nikaido for her magic, Kaiman wouldn't have gotten killed. She does not outwardly display these feelings to anyone, and only when she’s in private does she become more despondent.
Despite the bad things that have happened in her life, Nikaido doesn't give in and doesn't stop fighting. She presses on and stubbornly digs her heels in when she has to. Whether she’s being slowly transformed into a bug or having mushroom magic trying to grow painfully through her body, Nikaido never breaks down and refuses to give up. Even when she loses Kaiman, Nikaido doesn’t give in to her despair. She keeps going, even when it hurts.
If one does manage to get to become a friend rather than an acquaintance, they’ll discover that she is fiercely loyal. Though Nikaido is normally a careful, rational planner, she is willing to be reckless when it comes to aiding her friends. In fact, she’s ready to devote herself entirely to help them, even if she’s technically not gaining anything from it. Supporting the people she cares about is what matters most, not her own desires.

[The panic that sets in her chest as soon as she wakes is crippling. Her heart is a bird, madly beating its wings against the cage of her ribs as it tries to break free. Nikaido bolts upright, and the reassurances of nearby nurses doesn't calm her. How can they, when her first instinctual thought is that she's been kidnapped again?
She bursts out onto the streets, and it's only when she's put a good amount of distance between herself and the hospital that her pace slows. En... is dead. And this doesn't look like the world of magic users or any part of the Hole she's ever seen.
The horned woman just stands there for a long moment, covered in scratches and bruises, looking just... lost. She gathers herself after mere seconds, confidently approaching a local.]
Excuse me, where are we right now? [The man gives her a hasty look and quickens his pace, leaving Nikaido even more confused than before. What's the matter with him?
Oh. The horns jutting out of her head. Hastily, Nikaido tugs her hood up. She'll be stopping everyone she meets to try to get answers... hopefully she doesn't frighten the rest of them.]
